70th Anniversary of the North Sea flood of 1953

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the North Sea flood of 1953, a tidal surge that claimed the lives of 307 people along England’s East Coast, 1,836 in the Netherlands, 38 in West Flanders, and 19 in eastern Scotland. 24,500 houses were damaged and over 30,000 people were evacuated in England.

“As we commemorate the anniversary of one of the worst natural disasters to have befallen Britain, and the devastation and loss that it caused, we remember all of those who lost their lives from flooding in Britain and across the world.”
