Bedford Pumps provide fish friendly flood protection pumps to Jakarta

Bedford Pumps Ltd, the renowned British manufacturer of high capacity engineered to order pumping plant, has delivered and installed the first three (3) of eight (8) pumps for a landmark order to Indonesia.

The 1600mm diameter 25-ton pumps with 450mm ultimate solids handling will provide vital flood protection for Indonesia’s capital city.

Designed by Bedford Pumps and manufactured between their site in the South-East of England and their sister company, Avonmouth Engineering Services’ site in the South-West of the country, the project has been an incredible feat of cross-company collaboration. The pumps have been sold into the region via our parent company Hidrostal’s local partner, Mectron Engineering PTE Ltd. Hidrostal and Mectron have enjoyed a close working relationship for many years and we are delighted that with their support we have been able to provide flood mitigation for a region that is sadly all too often afflicted.

Each of the 700kW submersible axial flow pumpsets will pass 10,000 litres per second at 5m head. The pumps were selected from our fish friendly range due to the excessive amounts of large solids by way of vegetation in the river water. These pumps have been proven to safely pass fish and eels without damage and will handle solids of over 450mm without blockage, ensuring that items such as branches will pass between the impeller and the diffuser without becoming trapped.

The pumps are designed to provide enhanced life, lower maintenance costs, improved solids handling and market leading hydraulic efficiency resulting in the lowest total cost of ownership.

The additional five pumps will be delivered over the next few months.
